The ONA Supports the Riots in London

Yes – we do support those who defy the laws of nation-States, and we defy the brutality of the police who use violence to enforce those dishonourable laws and who are used to protect the assets of the State and the property and the businesses of those who support such States.
Bottom line – the ONA supports anarchists everywhere; we support anyone and everyone who defy the laws and the officials of nation-States. We support anyone and everyone who want to undermine and destroy the capitalist system. We support anyone and everyone who makes a practical stand against The System and its police – whoever they are they are and whatever is their motive, personal or otherwise.

One of the practical guidelines of the Order of the Nine Angles is that:
” It is of fundamental importance – to evolution both individual and otherwise – that what is Dark, Sinister or Satanic is made real in a practical way, over and over again. That is, that what is dangerous, awesome, numinous, tragic, deadly, terrible, terrifying and beyond the power of ordinary mortals, laws or governments to control is made manifest. In effect, non-Initiates (and even Initiates) need constantly reminding that such things still exist; they need constantly to be brought ‘face-to-face’, and touched, with what is, or appears to be, inexplicable, uncontrollable, powerful and ‘evil’. They need reminding of their own mortality – of the unforeseen, inexplicable “powers of Fate”, of the powerful force of “Nature”.
If this means killing, wars, suffering, sacrifice, terror, disease, tragedy and disruption, then such things must be – for it is one of the duties of a Satanic Initiate to so Presence The Dark, and prepare the way for, or initiate, the change and evolution which always result from such things. Such things as these must be, and always will be, because the majority of people are or will remain, inert and sub-human unless changed. The majority is – and always will be until it evolves to become something else – raw material to be used, moulded, cut-away and shaped to create what must be. There is no such thing as an innocent person because everyone who exists is part of the whole, the change, the evolution, the presencing of life itself, which is beyond them, and their life only has meaning through the change, development and evolution of life. Their importance is what they can become, or what can be achieved through their death. their tragedy, their living – their importance does not lie in their individual happiness or their individual desires or whatever.” - To Presence The Dark
Another of the practical guidelines of the Order of the Nine Angles is that there is no morality – no judgement about what is right and what is wrong – but our own individual one, with that judgement born not from feelings nor from some reaction to some particular event, but from a detached, reasoned, reflexion arising from practical experience. In short, from our own individual pathei-mathos, and the personal unique sinister weltanschauung that we develope from such practical experience, such reflexion, and such pathei-mathos.
The praxis of the ONA – whatever outward form is assumed, from Drecc to Seven-Fold Sinister Way to Niner to Rounwytha to Satanist – is a means to bring such necessary formative practical experience, such pathei-mathos, and thus bring-into-being not only a personal weltanschauung but one which and importantly is sinister, dark. Thus, as one ONA Adept wrote some decades ago now:
“I, and others like me, are the darkness which is necessary and without which evolution and knowledge are impossible. I am also my own opposite, and yet beyond both. This is not a riddle, but a statement of Mastery, and one which, alas, so few have the ability to understand.”
Hence, for us, terms such as ‘terrorism’, inhuman, atrocity, and ‘evil’, have no absolute, abstract, meaning and thus the ONA does not, therefore, condemn ‘terrorism’ or what mundanes regard as ‘evil’. For us, such things as just causal things – a means or a form, and thus can or could bring pathei-mathos and/or aid our sinister dialectic (or presencing of The Dark), or they can or could be a test, a challenge, a sinister experience, too far for someone aspiring to be one of us: someone who thus fails.
In addition, we know that those who, in our own times, bandy such moralistic words about – often when describing some act by some human being – basically fall into three categories: sheeple (Homo Hubris), hubriati, and Magian.
The sheeple employ such terms either because of their conditioning, or because their feelings overwhelm their reason (assuming they have and can use the faculty of reason). In both cases, they have no personal weltanschauung since the living they are allowed in the controlling nation-States where they dwell conspires (has been manufactured) to keep them away from such practical abyssal experiences as might propel them toward pathei-mathos and thence to the truth of individual judgement. Their morality – such as it is – derives from laws made by the nation-State, from their State education, from some religion the State approves of or allows (i.e. which is not a threat to them), or from some political, philosophical, or social theory that again their State approves of or allows (i.e. which is not a threat to them).
The hubriati employ such terms often in some attempt to control and manipulate the sheeple, being pragmatic and hypocritical as they are. For instance, the killing of non-combatants, including women and children (atrocities), by the sheeple under their control or influence (as in the armed forces of nation-States) is denied (lied about), or was ‘unfortunate’ (collateral damage) or is declared ‘lawful’ because of some law they have manufactured or because of some declaration of war they have issued. Thus, they make a distinction between lawful and unlawful killing – which basically means they declare lawful whatever killing happens in the name of The State or whatever they assume might ensure their own continuing power, control, and influence ‘in the name of the people’.
The Magian employ such terms as abstractions of the abstract theories which aid, maintain and develope such entities as the nation-State and the supra-national organizations (such as the UN) they have manufactured in the last century, and which entities and organizations keep the sheeple under control and ensure new generations of Homo Hubris are bred, ‘educated’ and fenced in with laws.
Thus, for the hubriati – and the sheeple – their own nation-States cannot be ‘terrorist’ or support ‘terrorism’. Only individuals – or organizations which their Magian dominated or Magian influenced nation-States do not approve of – can be ‘terrorist’. More recently, the hubriati – with the help of Magian organizations such as the UN – have gone further, and manufactured laws and ‘charters’ and ‘declarations’ which make it possible for them to declare some government they do not approve of as a ‘rogue State’, thus enabling to impose sanctions upon such rogue States, and – if they deem it necessary – invade some country or other and undertake a ‘regime change’, all of course accompanied by massive propaganda campaigns designed to convince the sheeple such regimes are ‘evil’ or ‘terrorist’ or ‘promoting terrorism’ or are ‘undemocratic’ or whatever is the Magian buzz-word of the decade.
The Hypocrisy of Mundanes
There thus develops an utter hypocrisy which the sheeple either are not aware of or which they share in where a nation-State such as Amrika can: (1) invade a land such as Iraq and cause the deaths of over half a million Muslims and ‘justify’ such invasion and such deaths as they accept (which is always far far less than they are responsible for) on the basis of a group killing some three thousand people, and which killing is deemed an ‘evil, terrorist, act’ and (2) slaughter nearly a thousand people in the course of a few years (including hundreds of women and children), by remote controlled unmanned drones, and consistently lie about the scale of the slaughter or blandly claim that the majority of those killed were ‘terrorists’ and thus according to them ‘legitimate targets’, and yet scream loudly about ‘terrorism’ and ‘evil’ when one or two people kill less than a hundred people in a shooting and bomb attack (as in Oslo, Norway).
Unsurprisingly, even most of those deigning to call themselves ‘Satanists’ are exposed as mundanes by their reaction to such individual events and by their tolerance of, or even approval of, such State-sponsored acts. For their reaction is based – as with conditioned sheeple – on some abstraction such as some presumed ‘innocence’ whereas we, as the quote above (from To Presence The Dark) should make clear take the Aeonic, the acausal, the sinister view, accepting there is no such thing as an ‘innocent person’ because everyone who exists is part of the whole, the change, the evolution, the presencing of life itself, and that the only division that matters, that we accept, is the one between us and mundanes. As mentioned elsewhere [1] we define a mundane as someone, over the age of sixteen, who is not one of our pledged brothers or sisters, and the only value we give to mundanes is that of them being a useful resource, for us.
” Their importance is what they can become, or what can be achieved through their death. their tragedy, their living – their importance does not lie in their individual happiness or their individual desires or whatever.”
Thus, if some mundanes are culled or injured in some act by us or by someone else we quite simply do nor care in the way mundanes do (or pretend to do) as we do not indulge in the hypocrisy and the lies of the hubriati. Neither are we concerned with propaganda, with ‘political spin’. We are what we are – sinister, satanic: adepts who desire to Presence The Dark. We are what makes us ONA.
Hence, the only question we ask after such acts is do those culled or injured meet the criteria of mundaneness? [2] and if those culled or injured do, then we judge that act not according to some abstract moralistic criteria, but on whether we as sinister individuals judge it has Presenced The Dark or on whether we, as an individual or as individuals, have acquired or obtained something useful from it – materially, or in terms of, for example, pathei-mathos.
This, of course, is Satanic – although naturally it is a satanism too far, too evil, for the pretentious mundanes who deign, today and in their delusion, to describe themselves as ‘Satanists’.

[2] That is, are they over the age of sixteen and not our pledged brothers or sisters. As mentioned in Children and The ONA, there is some flexibility in this age, with some of our kind regarding it to be sixteen years, others fourteen, and some others eighteen.

News From The Chamber of the Ieldran
I’ve had word that MM of Hammemit has entered his old Chamber of the Ieldran and is at work recording the follow up to 2009′s “Nature Mystic” album.
As you may know, it’s entitled “Morthwork” and should be released later this year. I’ve heard early demo versions of a few songs and I was surprised as the musick is slightly more “songlike” but with like a million different layers that creates a really intense but deep melancholy mood in the typical Hammemit style. Another surprise was the haunting cover of Emperor’s ‘Towards the Pantheon’!
Also last year’s MCD “…From the Old Hills Desolate” will be available again soon after record label THE HERESY PRESS relocated and is under new management.

Vampire Temple of Atazoth
* The Temple has come in existence since May 2011, and is the continuation of the Sinister Pathway Triangle Order, founded in 2003.
* The Temple has a prevalent curriculum of practical self-help topics as found on Scribd and Internet Archives.
* The Temple Grand Hierophant is always available for members to share and learn.
* The Temple offers a service to allow members to meet with each other worldwide where local groups are available.
~
The Temple sustains no religion; but, is an esoteric and philosophical way of living, and as such endorsing and striving in one accord to embody the positive characteristics of the Vampire myths. This includes love and respect for all life, even physical immortality through the reincarnations, individual elitism (aristocracy), proven intellectual capacities, civilised behaviour, worldly success, and personal satisfaction. The members subscribe to that which is lawful and socially appropriate.
~
Reasons for becoming a member
Each individual in our western world has the freedom to choose a religion or philosophy which is felt best for him or her; and, as such finally deciding to enter our non-religious Temple. Our Temple is esoteric, philosophical and psychological.
* The Temple helps its members to master the problems of vampiric life, and as such achieving world success.
* The Temple endeavour friendship all over the world.
* The Temple teaches through a mentorship program and in-person local meetings.
* The Temple enables its members to penetrate the Temple’s deep mysteries and occult or esoteric teachings.
* The Temple helps each and everyone to improve oneself, and as such become a better vampire.
* The Temple helps the individual to so love vampiric life as to strive to defeat death itself.
~
A Real Vampire is active twenty-four hours a day
Vampiric day-time perspective includes the emphasis on achieving and maintaining abundant success with regard to six most important issues of human life:
* Emergency survival planning and vampiric skills acquisition.
* Increased self-knowledge, self-acceptance and self-reliance.
* Being up-to-date with effective communication skills and strategies.
* Gaining perfect control over personal finances, and as such achieving wealth.
* Improving and protecting your physical health.
* Appreciating and working at scientific life extension leading to physical immortality.
Vampiric night-time perspective is an optional part of our esotericism and philosophy, but only for those who really wish to pursue it. The esoteric side of vampirism is the nightside. This is a transcendent view of vampiric reality and deals first of all with the exploration and understanding of the so-called “paranormal”, which is a mental technology traditionally alive since the Ancient Egypt religion of the Asetians built on predatory occultism, dark arts, and secrets long forgotten to mankind, being simply referred to as “magick”, and the hidden inner nature of the Self, the “I-ness”.
~
History of the Temple
The history of the Vampire Temple of Atazoth is the result of the founder’s history as vampire. His own bridging from the human to the state of vampire took place in August 2010, when he was urgently taken to the hospital with breathing problems. The doctors soon discovered that he had a bleeding stomach, going on unnoticed for quite a time and meanwhile lost a tremendous lot of blood. So, they decided to give him a blood transfusion, but one bag was not enough and transfused three bags of blood during the course of three consecutive days. That was obvious blood of unknown but healthy humans he received in order to survive. About two months later, after a successful open heart operation, he started writing manuscripts on vampirism in the frame of the Sinister Pathway Triangle Order, today the Vampire Temple of Atazoth. Atazoth is a mythical Dark Albion God from the Tree of Wyrd (Nine Angles Order).
Atazoth is the most powerful of the mythical Dark Albion Gods. The name itself (which correctly describes the entity only when chanted properly) signifies in one sense the purpose of the cosmic cycles and the opening of the gates since “Atazoth” as a word means ‘an increasing of azoth.’ Ask for the chant illustration.
As it is for the Sinister Pathway Triangle Order we are also elitists (aristocrats) for many good reasons, and we do not recognise any others with different claims and purposes.
~
Structure of the Vampire Temple of Atazoth
The Temple has its administration and gatherings in Gent, Belgium, but has members all over the globe. Each individual Temple (or Coven) accepts only six members, two triangles as it were. Many other groups of six members only can be created the world over. One must be 18 years old for Temple membership. Each member must promise not to advocate or involve oneself with criminal activities or anti-social behaviours such as physical blood drinking, or transfusions outside clinical necessities and emergencies. This means that we firmly reject all the negative aspects of vampiric legends and myths that are anti-life, anti-social, rude, self-defeating, and other criminal actions. As such, the Temple can never be charged responsible for unlawful and punishable actions of its members, misusing our literature.
Your spouse or equivalent partner is not considered an outsider, and joint the six members in a gathering.
Individual subscription to membership is free, but your free will offering is greatly appreciated each time we meet, to support our costs to run the Temple well.

Now, I hear such musick as dreams me – and I am again drifting along the Isis one Summer day with my loved one beside me, when poignancy of our departing is as yet another night away and the voices of those hateful ones who might part us if they knew of our love, our joining, are stilled, at least for now while the warm English Sun lasts and our bottle of Champagne is not quite empty…
And then, I am there also beside Fran, my love, that last morning of her life in May when she looked so lost, so lost, so haunted with suffering, so needful in her unspoken agony – and all I could do was maintain my selfish resolve and walk away to embark upon that train whose First Class carriage claimed me in comfort and whose provided breakfast I in my then needful material satiation so eagerly enjoyed…
And I am there that night when in subdued lampful darkness Sue breathed her last as I sat beside her and held her then still warmful hand.
What are such opinions of me by others, after this?
My past lives in such music of yours – such musick of your present, and future. As you yourself with your musical genius and your numinous creations live in that future which I in my time of departing will never see and share with such a causal being and forms as so constrain and still retain me here, at least for now. But of course, there is no you or I to separate or to make such distinctions, and it is this which is the secret which you perhaps have for so long saught, so that even if we two do not ever again meet in this, our separation of earthful being and at some point of intersecting causal Time, it does not and will not matter, except to that which still so keeps here and which in so many ways is still so important and so necessary to the type of beings we are and will be for so many Aeons, replete as we are with such human feelings and failings as make and keep us human.
So there is this mystery of such necessity of feeling even while we often so desire there was not. To know this, to feel this – to live this – mystery is what we are, and will be, for so many Aeons, and cannot for now escape from, however much such desire for escape snakes itself around us so that often we feel compressed, throttled, by such desiring of Life when in truth it is ground of our necessary human dwelling.
Thus, there is no mystery of succession, one Gnostic to another, as perhaps you once believed – no sayings; no secret teachings to reveal; no hidden manuscripts. Only this – of such connexions between us as such music, such Art, as you make and such memories, such deeds, as have made my past. No you and I to cloud each others judgements by frequency of spoken words.
Entwined thus by connexions we few in our beginning journey only so dimly see. Thus is there Wyrd far beyond the singular individual fate we two once in far more youthful times so believed in and adored.
We become, we are, each intimation of The Divine that so enthrals us, still – so that our pasts become presenced in our future and our future in our shared pasts: for so long as we hold fast to that love which dreams us, beckoning in such sadness, strength, ecstasy, and hope as melds us to those beyond our selves. Their dreams our dreams; their hurt our hurt; their joy our joy; their life our life. And one lifetime here is never ever long enough… Which is why there is the you beyond the I that is this me.

To dub Obskure Torture’s music as doom/death, funeral doom, or even the European parallel of the legendary American band Winter would be a criminal over-simplification, to say the least; as Obskure Torture has a completely singular approach to music, enveloped within its very own rotten aesthetics, conveying vileness galore from beginning to end. ”Spilling the Blood of the World” is sonic primitivism incarnate, a reduction of the very concept of the metal genre, or music altogether. Yet — and here’s the magic of this recording — its charm and allure are irrevocable and unquestionable.
Prior to it being a metal album, ”Spilling the Blood of the World” is first and foremost an occult ritual soundtrack; dark, filthy and intimidating. Its stark simplicity is paradoxical in the face of the awe-inspiring qualities contained within this album; during the listening experience, one question hammers down again and again: how did the musician behind this grotesque sonic entity manage to write and perform something so ominous and fascinating, using the utmost basic metal elements and maneuvers? How does such an under-produced, raw, unripe product manage to play so many tricks on the mind using a primitive, Neanderthal, simplistic aural methodology?
One who seeks musicianship is well advised to seek elsewhere; there’s nothing of that sort here, nor are there recording qualities, production values, techniques or sophistication — there is only the eternal night, ricocheting from every simple riff, from every torturous, slow drum bit, from every quasi-groove and venomous shriek, snaking their way, interlacing, intertwining into this thick, crude, crass sonic cloth of darkness, a fabric of sounds behind which hides a colossal dagger aimed at the very heart of the world, twisting and spilling its blood. Be forewarned…

Esoteriko – Christos Beest
1985 – 1988: Initiated into a Mancunian Coven at age of 17, practising ‘Alexandrian Witchcraft’. Studies and works with the Goetia, and undertakes many qabalistic workings as part of training with coven. Becomes increasingly interested in chaos magic and Satanism, causing a break with the coven.
1988: Moves to Bath, Somerset, and begins working with a companion exploring menstrual/Hel magick. Further workings with Goetia, including storm conjurations. Complete rejection of psychedelic drugs in favour of magickal techniques in order to alter consciousness.
Produces Goetic paintings using menstrual and own blood, and two large oil paintings depicting birth of AntiChrist – all now lost.
Discovers the Order of Nine Angles towards the end of this period after reading ‘A Gift for the Prince – A Guide to Human Sacrifice’ in Stephen Sennitt’s Nox magazine. It is a revelation after believing the Satanism he was searching for (contra La Vey et al) did not yet exist.
1989: Moves to Newport, South Wales and is initiated into Peter J Carroll’s Temple in Bristol, and becomes fully involved in the chaos magic of the IOT. Makes contact with the ONA, and meets an individual from that Order at Shrewsbury rail station, December 5th, 1989. Work with the ONA’s system of Sinister Hermetic Magick begins shortly thereafter, using original Black Book and Naos.
1990: Continues working with IOT, experimenting with his own rituals within the Temple, and slowly introducing sinister elements. Writes a play ‘Divulls’ which contains various sinister/septenary references and which is performed by the IOT in a secluded wood near the Cheddar Gorge on the Spring Equinox. MS now lost.
In January of 1990, he begins work on the Sinister Tarot, whose images are derived from his pathway and sphere workings. The first image is ‘Mistress of Earth’.
Completes pathway and sphere workings, and successfully undertakes the rite of External Adept at Twmbarlym in Gwent, May 24th.
Undertakes ‘Black Pilgrimage’ in Shropshire, Autumn Equinox.
Takes over editorship of Fenrir, and establishes ‘Brekekk’ as an outlet for ONA works and contact point for the Order.
Appears in the film ‘Nameless Kults’ playing ‘The Wizard’, during which he recites the Hymn to Baphomet.
1991: Moves to Bristol. Begins to seriously study esoteric chant. Remains with IOT for a year and is appointed Peter Carroll’s ‘Insurbordinate’, a role he plays rather too well. Relations with IOT wane as work with ONA takes over completely. Some sinister chants (‘Atazoth’) introduced into IOT rituals which cause some disruption.
Meets various candidates for Order (ONA) membership, and guides a few towards the stage of External Adept (although none successfully complete that rite).
Records ‘Self Immolation Rite’, originally written as an absurdist ritual for the IOT and performed at a Temple meeting.
Forms a short lived group devoted to acts of arson in Bristol.
1992: Begins to train for Insight Rôle – that of Right Wing revolutionary. Briefly joins Territorial Army in Lancashire, initially as a means to acquire weapons re. insight role. Leaves, and spends a brief period at Pluscarden Monastery in North Scotland, studying Gregorian Chant.
Finishes Major Arcana of Sinister Tarot.
Creates ‘Caelethi’ following a second undertaking of pathways and spheres.
1993 – 1997: Moves to York, and joins a Wiccan coven. Gradually introduces sinister elements into the group, culminating in a performance of The Ceremony of Recalling. Coven splits and he leaves with his Priestess and another member (who was at the time a Catholic Priest) to form a Sinister Temple which continues until 1997. This Temple performs works mainly from the Black Books, at an outdoor location. The group becomes proficient in chant.
Regarding his Insight Rôle, he makes contact with the British Movement, and spends ’93 – ’94 meeting and working with individuals from the organisation and from Yorkshire football firms. One particularly interesting meeting involved both skinheads and anarchists uneasily discussing ‘system breakdown’ in a hired room in a pub in Leeds.
Helps create and run Reichsfolk, and undertakes various physical goals re. Order guidelines to aid Insight Role.
Trains in physis.
Travels on a number of occasions to Ireland and Scotland to research suitable locations for the rite of Internal Adept.
1997: Successfully undertakes Internal Adept (later publishing diary under the title ‘Dyssolving’).
On return, performs last rituals with Temple, and moves with Priestess to Shropshire. The Temple bury their crystal at the rural location where their rituals took place, near the village of Murton, on the outskirts of York.
1997 – 2001: Continues with magickal work in the various esoteric areas of Shropshire associated with the Sinister Tradition. Continues to meet with and guide a few individuals.
Completes work on The Sinister Tarot, the originals being locked away in a vault along with various other items in a certain Eastern European city, with instructions that these are not to be unearthed for a century.
As another Insight Rôle, becomes involved in the creation of the National-Socialist Movement. Attends meetings, distributes literature. Pursues objective of establishing an Aryan commune in Shropshire, funded by a playboy millionaire member of the NSM. Is interviewed by French journalists.
In conjunction with raids on NSM members, he is tipped off about a grand exposé of his involvement with Satanism and politics to appear in an issue of ‘News of the World’ – but this is pulled mysteriously at the last minute.
After David Myatt retires from leadership, he takes over Reichsfolk and begins to add to the writings concerning the religion of Aryanism, receiving death threats from various ‘comrades’ who do not approve. Continues with this role for 9 months until it comes to its own end after the entire Movement gradually retreats following nail bombings.
The persona of CB then disappears into the Silent Desert.
2009: Re-emergence as ‘Audun’ to briefly help out with some aspects, followed by a withdrawal to the abyssal realms of the Scottish Highlands.

A Review of
Myngath - Some Recollections of the Wyrdful Life of David Myatt
Myngath – subtitled Some Recollections of the Wyrdful Life of David Myatt – is David Myatt’s recently published autobiography. To those unfamiliar with Myatt, he has been called, at various times, in the last forty years, an evil genius, the most evil nazi in Britain, a ferocious Jihadi [1], a deeply subversive intellectual [2], and described as the mentor who drove David Copeland to kill [3].
In these forty or more years, Myatt has been twice jailed for racist attacks; acted as Colin Jordan’s bodyguard; led the political wing of the violent neo-nazi group Combat 18; translated ancient Greek literature; written several volumes of pagan poetry; been a Catholic monk, and last – but not least – supported Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.
According to the British newspaper, The Observer, Myatt was the “ideological heavyweight” behind the violent neo-nazi group Combat 18 [4]. Political scientist Professor George Michael wrote that Myatt has “arguably done more than any other theorist to develop a synthesis of the extreme right and Islam,” [5]; while he was described, at a NATO conference on terrorism, in 2006, as having called on “all enemies of the Zionists to embrace the Jihad against Jews and the United States…” [6] Myatt has also been accused of being the Grand Master of the secretive and sinister Occult group – famed for its support of human sacrifice - the Order of Nine Angles, an accusation he has always denied [7].
In 1998, after over thirty years of involvement with neo-nazi politics, Myatt confounded his supporters and critics by converting to Islam.
Given this varied and somewhat strange and extreme life, one might expect his autobiography to provide interesting, if not fascinating, personal accounts of street brawls; meetings with Muslim extremists; life as a neo-nazi fanatic, and then as a White convert to Islam.
What one gets, however, is something of an apologia – often rather cursory accounts of some events in his life, followed by an explanation of his feelings and motives. Occasionally, Myatt adds one of his own poems in order to express these feelings. The section on Islam – on his life as a Muslim – is particularly sparse, and while it seems somewhat glossed over, it is certainly interesting, with Myatt writing, for instance, that, “being part of the Ummah dissolved every last vestige of my former political beliefs…..I travelled in the Muslim world, met some very interesting and committed Muslims…..In a literal way, Islam taught me humility, something I aspired to during my time as a monk but which my then prideful nature rebelled against…..”
In fact, the work neatly falls into two categories, almost exactly mirrored by Myatt’s division of Myngath into two parts. The first category centers around his early life (which incidentally includes being a Catholic monk) and his often violent and always extreme political involvements; the second, around his personal life, and in particular his liaisons with women. It is these liaisons that are, for me – and I suspect for many other readers – the most interesting, as well as being, in my opinion, the most informative about Myatt’s personal character.
These liaisons include two tragic events, and Myatt is remarkably honest about his feeling and his failings; and one is left with the impression of reading an almost religious story of redemption, only without the God of Christianity, but instead with the Allah of the Muslims.
This volte face – from fanatical neo-nazi to Muslim; from White racism to the multi-ethnic brotherhood of the Ummah – would of itself be more than interesting, but what makes it fascinating is that Myatt becomes, in the words of writer Martin Amis, a ferocious Jihadi, supporting Osama bin Laden and the Taliban, and apparently has something of an identity crises after falling in love with a non-Muslim women who commits suicide when he leaves her because she won’t convert to Islam [8].
In probably the strangest passage of the book, Myatt recalls how his feelings after this personal tragedy “may well have had their genesis in my upbringing as a Catholic, my time as a Catholic monk, and my study of the life and writings of such mystics as Bernard of Clairvaux, Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, and Juan de Yepes.”
Apparently, he questioned his Islamic faith, and developed in earnest a new personal philosophy, which he called The Numinous Way, only to ultimately reject what he called this “means of dealing with my turbulent emotions” as the “posturings of one still prideful fool…”
Thus, the story is of a violent, driven, often fanatical and selfish man, obsessed with making his own inner and extremist political vision real, who is also something of a lothario, but who, it seems, through becoming Muslim and then through doubts caused by the death of a loved one, learns the true meaning of humility – or, as he calls it, tawadu.
Overall, this apologia – I do not feel it deserves to be called an autobiography – might therefore be more correctly described as a modern allegory, a tale of redemption, and it is this which, in my opinion, makes it a worthwhile and ultimately a valuable book to read. For its interest lies not in the person or character of Myatt himself – not in his various peregrinations, nor even in his own motivations for his deeds and involvements – but rather in the allegory: a modern, and interestingly a Muslim, Faust.
